KAI Successfully Completed the Second Artificial Icing Campaign

 

Sacheon, 4 June 2018 – Korea Aerospace Industries LTD. (KAI) announced on the 1st day that the company proved airworthiness for its KUH-1 (Surion) helicopter’s system icing operation ability in the 41st Airworthiness Certification Deliberation Committee held by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA). KAI has successfully completed this second Surion test for the artificial icing campaign for four months as of December 2017 in Marquette, Michigan, the US and then the Surion acquired its moderate icing ability.

“The Surion helicopter secured its system icing operational ability which was controversial so far,” said an official at KAI. “From now on, we will provide our fullest support for the plane to successfully carry out its missions that defend our military and people.”

The system icing flight test involves a helicopter equipped with a HISS (Helicopter  Icing Spray System) flying ahead of a test object, which is composed of an artificial icing test which is conducted behind the helicopter making an artificial icing condition and a natural icing test which is actually conducted in the clouds in the sky. The first icing test completed on October 2015 to March 2016. The helicopter had not met some of the airworthiness requirements at the time.

KAI resolved a few problems which were raised in the first flight test, such as anti-icing and de-icing systems, including the engine air intake and wire cutter, and conducted the second flight test. As a result of such tests, the Surion helicopter showed a test report which satisfied the necessary requirements and proved successfully that the copter is able to fly in a safe way, even though it encounters an icing or freezing condition while making a fli
